GHOST RECON DEDICATED SERVER TIPS

HOW TO CREATE A GHOST RECON DEDICATED SERVER

The first thing you need to do is launch the normal game executable C:\Program Files\Red Storm Entertainment\Ghost Recon\GhostRecon.exe and go to the Options screen, then the Multiplayer tab. At the bottom of that tab are two very important items: Remote Access Password and Allow Remote Access checkbox.

After you have set the remote access password, and enabled the remote access check box go ahead and exit the game. On your desktop, or anywhere else where a shortcut would be handy, create a shortcut to the Ghost Recon Executable. C:\Program Files\Red Storm Entertainment\Ghost Recon\GhostRecon.exe Now, in order to tell Ghost Recon you want to start the server in the “dedicated” mode, you need to add the "–autoserve" (without the quotes and making sure you include a space before typing -autoserve) switch to the shortcut. This is done very simply. Right click on your shortcut and select properties, and then add the switch as indicated in the image below:

Now, when you run this shortcut the GR server is started in the dedicated server mode. Ghost Recon launches in a 640x480 window that should look something like this one:

As the host you can still edit server options by clicking on the "Edit Server" button on the dedicated server GUI. Since you enabled remote access, anyone with your password can also edit the server settings seen below:

That’s all there is to it. If you run into trouble, feel free to post in our forums!

CREATING TWO GHOST RECON DEDICATED SERVERS ON ONE COMPUTER

Thanks to the hard work of xxxGIJoe and Anubis of WOLF Gaming.net, GR fans now have a very useful step-by-step guide on How to Setup Two GR Dedicated Servers on One Computer. Wolfservers is already doing this, and you can check out how smooth running two games on their one ded server rig is by checking out their Wolf Tracker for GR.

So why bother having two servers on one machine? A dedicated server on even a (relatively) low-end Pentium 4 1.5 GHz system uses only about 30-40% of its system resources. For those of you who have invested in a GR dedicated server, this guide helps you make the most use out of your machine!

    HOW TO CONFIGURE MAP ROTATION

You can setup the map rotation for your dedicated server by editing the following file:
    Ghost Recon\Data\Save\Script\default.ass

This is an XML file but editing it with Notepad should be straight-forward.

HOW TO HOST FROM BEHIND A ROUTER

To host from behind a router, you must access the setup software inside your router and find the "Forwarding" section (usually under "Advanced" settings). Port forwarding is used to set up public services on your network. When users from the Internet make certain requests on your router, they will be redirected to the specified IP.

After identifying the IP address of the computer you are hosting on, set "Service Port Range" to 2346-2348, then in the Protocol section, pick "Both TCP and UDP".

    VOICE COMMUNICATION

You can take multiplayer GR to the next level by using third-party voice comm software. The two voice comm programs we recommend are:
  • TeamSpeak 2 - includes the ability to use temporary/sub channels and be hosted on a dedicated server
  • Roger Wilco

HOW TO PLAY GR IN A WINDOW

Some of you may have enough screen real estate to play GR in a window while running other programs. This may come in handy if you are taking screenshots of the game, or making a machinima movie.

Click on the image to see a larger version.

So how do you run GR in a Window? Here are the steps: (Note that you do this at your own risk ... GR-R is not responsible if you subsequently have problems with your GR installation.)
  • Find the "options.xml" file in the Ghost Recon folder
  • Rename the file "options.txt"
  • Open the options.txt file in Notepad
  • Find the "Fullscreen" tags and change "TRUE" to "FALSE"
  • Rename the file back to "options.xml" and run the game

You can set the size of the window in the game's Option Menu. To be able to use your cursor outside the game window, just ALT-TAB to whatever other apps you are running concurrently.
