CREATING
TWO GHOST RECON DEDICATED SERVERS ON ONE COMPUTER
2003 Mar 14
Ghost Recon was released in 2001 requiring a minimum of a Pentium II 450 MHz CPU. Since then, much faster and more
powerful computers are readily available. A dedicated server on even a low-end Pentium 4 system uses only about 30-40% of
its system resources.
For those of you who have invested in a GR dedicated server and want to make the most use out of
your machine, this guide explains how to successfully run two different servers on the same computer. This information
will also take advantage of the new Hyper-Threading
technology now available in Intel's latest CPUs which allows a single CPU behave like a dual processor.
Required Equipment & Software
One retail Ghost Recon CD
Desert Siege and Island Thunder mission packs are optional
CPU - Pentium 4 1.5 GHz equivalent or higher
Memory - 512 MB SDRAM (DDR preferred) or RDRAM
Operating System - Windows 9X/ME/2000/XP
DirectX - DirectX 8.0 or higher (included on GR CD)
Video Card - 16 MB DirectX 8.0 compatible card (32 MB preferred)
Hard Drive Space - 2 GB minimum (4 GB for two dedicated mission pack servers)
CD-ROM - 12X or better
Sound Card - DirectX 8.0 compatible sound card
Network - Two independent 10/100 Network Interface Cards (NIC) with two SEPARATE WAN (ISP/Network provided) IP’s.
Without separate IP’s, there will be conflicts with the TCP/IP communication.
Internet Connection - T1 or higher
Server Preparation
Prior to doing a new install of Ghost Recon, make sure that all system drivers are current and installed.
Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ for Windows updates
and visit any other sites that may have updates for your system hardware/software environment.
Such places are support/driver sites for the PC manufacturer, video card manufacturer and sound card manufacturer.
Server Setup
Now that the drivers are updated, install Ghost Recon in the default directory through the install feature
included on the CD. Once the install has completed, you may now install the mission packs you would like to run on
your server(s). Be sure to go to Ghost Recon.com for the latest
official game patches.
Once the mission packs and patches are installed, use Windows Explorer to locate the Ghost Recon directory
(X:\Program Files\Red Storm Entertainment\Ghost Recon).
Copy that entire original directory to another
location and label the "Ghost Recon" folder to "Ghost Recon 2nd"
(C:\Program Files\Red Storm Entertainment\Ghost Recon 2nd).
IP’s should be specified in the options.xml file, but if they aren’t, go into GR and GR2nd "Options -> Multiplayer"
and select the network card you want to use for each server.
Icon Setup
You now have two different GR processes available. Before setting them up for dedicated server operation,
make a copy of the original Ghost Recon desktop shortcut and label that "Ghost Recon 2nd".
Right-click on the "Ghost Recon 2nd" icon and select Properties. If you don’t know the exact file mapping, hit the
"Find Target" button and you will be able to search for to the Ghost Recon.exe within the Ghost Recon 2nd
folder and map the Ghost Recon 2nd desktop shortcut to it.
To make the servers dedicated and connect by IP only, right-click each icon, and where it says
"X:\Program Files\Red Storm Entertainment\Ghost Recon\GhostRecon.exe" (where X is the drive of your install),
add the following argument "-autoserve" (without the quotes and a space from the end of the "X:Program Files …
GhostRecon.exe"). The icon command should look like this.
Repeat for the Ghost Recon 2nd desktop icon as well. Done!
Start them up and happy gaming!
Using GSLauncher
The GSLauncher gets installed with the Ubi Soft client software. You run it like you normally would if running a server on Ubi.com
except for entering in a "Specific IP" for each of the servers. There is also a path for where the GSLauncher
looks for the GhostRecon.exe file. For the second server, you need to change it to look in the Ghost Recon2 directory.
