Ghost Recon: Heroes Unleashed
[CR6 12/24/2008 @ 04:53 AM] ( Post a comment )
The GR community is in for a treat with a massive new compilation mod just in time for Christmas! Years in the making and nearly 900MB in size, ApexMods has released Ghost Recon: Heroes Unleashed for fans of the original GR1 PC. It features the very best of mods, maps and missions over the last 6 years by top GR1 modders around the world, along with Apex's own contributions to improve the realistic and immersive experience we all love in the original GR.

Check out the GR.net forum thread and official press release about the mod along with a full listing of the contents thanks to Pave Low here!

Ghost Recon: The Novel
[CR6 12/04/2008 @ 03:30 AM] ( Post a comment )
Yes, it had to happen. For years, GR was the only Clancy game franchise that did not have an accompanying novel. Even early games like Tom Clancy's SSN and Politika were novelized! Well, it looks like this oversight has been corrected and the first Ghost Recon novel is now available. You can check it out here at Amazon.

The End Begins for Ghost Recon
[CR6 11/12/2008 @ 01:50 AM] ( Post a comment )
Ubisoft is in the midst of hyping it's newest Tom Clancy title End War which appears to include an effort to give characters from all the Clancy game franchises a cameo appearance. Here's a short and somewhat enigmatic story that gives us a peek into how the Ghosts tie in.

BlackFoot Studios Q&A at SimHQ
[CR6 09/10/2008 @ 10:37 PM] ( Post a comment )
Long-time GR community members are familiar with John Sonedecker as he served as Lead Artist/Level Designer for GR1. SimHQ has published an excellent interview with him about recent developments at his new company BlackFoot Studios. The best part of this Q&A is more background info on BFS's new game "Sky Gods" which was recently announced. Make sure you check out the official BlackFoot Studios website and its forums for more news about Sky Gods and their previously announced title Ground Branch!

GR Complete Pack PC on Steam
[CR6 07/18/2008 @ 8:39 PM] ( Post a comment )
Steam has now provided a great way to get digital copies of all the Ghost Recon games for $40. That's five GR titles for the usual cost of one PC game. Check out the offer here.

There are almost no stores that still carry the retail version of GR1 and the two expansion packs these days, so now you can refer friends to Steam to find them.

GR:AW 2 Legacy Edition for Xbox 360
[CR6 04/26/2008 @ 9:20 PM] ( Post a comment )
The official RSE website has news that the GR:AW 2 Legacy Edition for Xbox 360 is now available in Europe and Asia. According to the press release and accompanying trailer (streaming WMV), the Legacy Edition includes every DLC pack previously available on Xbox Live (two Throwback (classic map) packs, two Co-op Collection packs, one More Weapons pack) on one unique additional disk.

Why they are not releasing this gem of a compilation in North America is beyond me ...

Play 2 Compete Interviews Geridak
[CR6 04/24/2008 @ 01:17 AM] ( Post a comment )
Thanks to Paladin for letting us know that he has scored an interview over at his website Play 2 Compete with none other than Jeff "Geridak" McGann, Creative Director at Red Storm. The interview offers us some great insight into game development and the industry from one of the designers behind the GR:AW series.

RSE Reboots Website
[CR6 04/17/2008 @ 10:36 PM] ( Post a comment )
Red Storm finally updated their website early this year but many people (like myself) haven't discovered the new look until recently. Make sure you check out their new widescreen monitor-friendly website which so far has reasonably up-to-date news, and even a link to their Facebook page!

Red Storm's new website

Honestly, I was kinda disappointed in the "History" section as it mainly mentions RSE's mega-selling franchises but none of their less-popular but nevertheless interesting nuggets like Force 21 and Freedom: First Resistance :-)

By the way, Red Storm's official website and astute fans have pointed out that April 16, 2008 was Day One for the Ghost's first mission in Tblisi, Georgia. To celebrate this milestone, Red Storm dug into their archives to show off some classic images, some never seen before!

Special Forces Instructor Schools Red Storm
[CR6 03/24/2008 @ 11:57 PM] ( Post a comment )
Here's a fantastic article that we presume was published around the time GR:AW 1 was released, but we hadn't seen until now. The official Xbox website posted a very informative interview with a Special Forces Instructor that Red Storm consulted with to ensure the authenticity of GR2/Summit Strike and GR:AW 1. Definitely worth a read!

    GR:AW 2 360 Co-op Collection #1 & More Guns Pack
    [CR6 01/30/2008 @ 08:53 AM] ( 1 Comments )
As of yesterday, GR:AW 2 360 gamers can finally get their hands on not just one, but two new downloads!

The first download is the GR:AW 2 "More Guns Pack" which includes 7 additional weapons for single player Quick Mission mode. Best of all, the More Guns Pack DLC is free!

For 800 Microsoft Points, the Co-op Collection DLC is now available and features a 5-mission co-op campaign set in El Salvador that continues the story from GR:AW 2. These 5 maps are based on fan-favorite GR1 maps (Caves, Railroad Bridge, Battlefield, Plantation, Swamp Airfield). There are 9 maps in total, two of which are brand-new adversarial maps (Rooftop, Business Park). The Co-op Collection also offers 9 new achievements.

A title update was also released yesterday with fixes for GR:AW 2 that you can read about here.

Mission Pack 3: SOAF For GR
    [CR6 12/22/2007 @ 2:59 PM] ( 2 Comments )
GWDS (a.k.a. GiWeDa a.k.a. Giwex) has released a very cool utility to easily port maps and characters from SOAF to GR! You must have both Ghost Recon and The Sum of All Fears installed to use this. GWDS has also included a single mission file for each SOAF map for modders to script their own GR missions based on SOAF maps!

SOAF has long been considered as the unofficial third mission pack for GR1. You can download this fantastic Christmas gift from GWDS for GR fans here!

    GR:AW 2 Co-op Collection Delayed
    [CR6 12/19/2007 @ 11:43 PM] ( Post a comment )
Many of you have been wondering what the status is of the co-op DLC for GR:AW 2 that was set to be released over a month ago. Fact is Ubi hasn't provided any notable news about the GR franchise in the last couple months until today: we now have an official update (thanks to Red Storm's new Community Developer Kimi :-) that RSE is still working hard on getting the Co-op Collection and a gun pack out to fans but we won't see them until 2008.

Until then, fans can whet their appetites with three video flythroughs of various levels included in the upcoming DLC.

    GR:AW 2 Co-op Collection DLC Announced
    [CR6 10/17/2007 @ 9:52 PM] ( 1 Comments )
IGN has the comprehensive lowdown on what looks like an amazing new DLC for GR:AW 2 360. Due in late October or early November, the GR:AW 2 Co-Op Collection features a new 5-mission campaign that continues the story from GR:AW 2.

There are also 9 new achievements, and 9 adversarial maps - seven of which are remakes of classic GR1 maps like Caves, Railroad Bridge, and Battlefield! Read the full press release here.

    America's Army: True Soldiers Hands-On
    [CR6 09/20/2007 @ 12:52 AM] ( Post a comment )
IGN has published a hands-on preview of the Xbox 360 exclusive America's Army: True Soldiers being developed by Red Storm. There are details about the huge number of gameplay modes, 8-mission campaign, customizable soldiers, and more!

Backed by RSE's experience and success with GR:AW 360's multiplayer over the past few years, this title (which has received little fanfare so far) is looking like it could be a huge hit on Xbox Live this fall.

GR:AW 2 PC Benchmarks on Windows XP vs Vista
    [CR6 09/03/2007 @ 1:04 PM] ( Post a comment )
With pretty much all new computers in the last year having 64-bit processors and Windows XP being harder and harder to find as retailers sell systems almost exclusively with Vista these days, gamers are facing the biggest transition since the days of migrating from Windows 98SE.

The good folks at SimHQ have responded to this by posting an excellent article where they pit Windows XP Pro 32-bit head-to-head with Vista Ultimate 64-bit using some of the most popular military/sim games as benchmarks. Interestingly, the GR:AW 2 benchmarks are a bit of an anomaly as Vista doesn't fall behind as much as in most other games.

    GR:AW 2 360 Throwback Pack #2 Released!

The best news is that Throwback Pack #2 is completely free! And it gets even better: Throwback Pack #1 is also now free (it was previously available for 800 Microsoft Points)!

Team Xbox has a rundown of the seven new maps that revisit classics from GR2/SS and GR:AW 1:

    GR:AW 2 PC & 360 Updates
    [CR6 08/31/2007 @ 01:05 AM] ( 1 Comments )
For some reason, the end of August has seen a flurry of GR:AW 2 related news. First up: GRIN has released the v1.04 patch for the PC version of GR:AW 2, details of which can be found here. Also, thanks to Red Storm dev Jeff "Geridak" McGann for posting the details of the GR:AW 2 360 Title Update #2 which should be available anytime now.

    GR:AW 2 PS3 Released
    [CR6 08/30/2007 @ 8:39 PM] ( Post a comment )
The official GR website has announced that the PlayStation 3 version of GR:AW 2 has been released. Check out some comments from initial reviews of the game here.

An interesting coincidence is that the PS3 update of the classic PS1 game Warhawk was also released this week to rave reviews! Long-time GR fans may recognize that the director behind the Warhawk dev team is none other than Brian Upton who was the Lead Designer of the original Ghost Recon game.

    Serellan Departs Red Storm
    [CR6 08/15/2007 @ 11:34 AM] ( Post a comment )
It truly is a sad day for the GR community as we have received news that we are losing the developer who has really became the face and spokesman/liason with GR fans and fansites over the past few years: Christian "Serellan" Allen posted this letter below at the Ubi.com forums informing us that he has accepted a new job at Microsoft's Bungie Studios.
    Hello all,

Well, it's been a great ride, but everything comes to an end, and for me, that time has come. I have had a blast working on the Ghost Recon franchise for the better part of the past five years, in roles from Assistant Designer on GR:IT Xbox on up to Creative Director on GRAW2 360. It's been great both designing the games and interacting with the community. GR has a great bunch of fans, ones that won't hesitate to give their opinions (often, and loudly!).

Working at RSE and Ubisoft has been one of the most exciting experiences of my life, and I've learned a ton (often from mistakes :-) but for various reasons, I've decided to move on to something different. I’ll be picking up stakes and moving out to the Pacific Northwest, where I've accepted a Design Lead position at Bungie. I’m an Alaskan boy, so the pine trees of Washington are a bit more appealing to me than the oaks in North Carolina (and 70 degree heat index beats 105 in my book :-)

I'm still a GR and R6 fan (as I always have been), so don't be surprised if you see me lurking around on Live (I still gotta get that Ultimate Defender achievement!). Meanwhile, keep an eye out for Jeff "Geridak" McGann and Chris "Braybot" Bray, Designers at Red Storm; they will be scouring the forums now for your feedback instead of me.

    Thanks,

    Christian "Serellan" Allen

We at GR Retreat have the utmost respect for Serellan, not only being a designer behind one of the greatest tactical shooter franchises of all time, but for being approachable and not afraid to interact with fans both online and in person (like when we interviewed him here at E3). Not only did we find him articulate and informative, but a genuinely nice guy who cared about what fans thought and never forgot his roots as a fan and modder.

We want to wish him all the best at his new job at Bungie (where he joins fellow RSE alumni Steve Cotton) and look forward to seeing his name in the credits of more blockbuster games! In the meantime, you can check out Serellan's new weblog for more updates!

    GR:AW 2 PC Released!
    [CR6 07/19/2007 @ 9:44 PM] ( Post a comment )
The PC version of GR:AW 2 has been out in Europe since July 13th, and now fans in North America should be able to find it in stores this weekend. All reports so far indicate that this game is a winner, so kudos to GRIN for a job well done!

The best place on the 'net to chat about the new game is over at GR.net's GR:AW 2 forums. Make sure you leave your comments and suggestions there as the developers frequently drop by to check out fan feedback.

Ground Branch Announced by BlackFoot Studios
    [CR6 07/12/2007 @ 7:46 PM] ( Post a comment )
BlackFoot Studios has announced the title of its first game that has been generating huge excitement in the squad-based tactical gaming community: Ground Branch. Here's a snippet from the synopsis:
Ground Branch is the premiere title from Blackfoot Studios. The term Ground Branch is a little known Military and Intelligence reference phrase for the paramilitary wing of the CIA.

These teams are not constrained by the law of land warfare that applies to military units. They operate under the radar and outside public knowledge, often conducting operations in conjunction with Special Operations Forces. Their members are drawn from the best former SOF operators from around the world including US Army Special Forces, British SAS, Australian SAS, Navy SEALs, Delta Force, and GSG9 just to name a few.

Find out more information about the game at BlackFoot Studio's Ground Branch forums!
